Chapter 14

KATHERYN

Walking down Main Street toward my salon, I can feel the full effect of the sun’s rays heating the earth. I love seeing the open wooden doors and blue paint on the buildings, accented with clay pots of multiple sizes still with a few plants in them. This is what makes Texas so lovely. Even in November we can have scorchers. I’m pretty sure the radio said it would be high eighties today. I would love to keep my door permanently open but it gets too hot with curling irons, flat irons, and blow dryers, I have to have the A/C running.

Nearing my salon, I see a white envelope taped to my door. My stomach sinks a little, I hope it’s not my first client canceling. I would have loved to get another hour of sleep. The thought of Chase from last night has me smiling. I refuse to let the fact that he left in the middle of the night ruin the moment we shared.

Pulling the envelope off the door, I open up and head toward the front counter. I might as well open up, before looking at what’s inside the envelope. If I have time I can run across the street for a coffee, maybe even a latte. I had one in the city the other day, and I think I am already permanently hooked. It’s amazing what a little bit of froth can do for flavor.

It doesn’t take me long until I am staring at the envelope. Sitting on the bar stool, I tear open the side of it and pull out the piece of paper inside. It is type written in fancy handwriting.

Tsk, Tsk.

You have not been staying away from Chase.

You have been warned.

I almost laugh out loud at the ridiculousness of the note. If Ruby was so serious about me staying away she should have talked to me. Now I don’t mean cornering me in a bathroom. But sitting down and talking about this over sweet tea. Sending idle threats like this does no one any good. I make a mental note to go to the Rogers’ farm to talk to her.

She is a sweet girl. After her graduating frenzy, I do understand why she left that night and hasn’t been back to town for more than one night, up until now that is.

“Kat!” The sound of my best friend’s voice brings me out of my thoughts.

“Don’t you ever work?” I tease her.

“I was thinking of takin’ a little bit of a break to go check out that project the Bennett family is doing. Wanna come with me?” Her eyes look way too sweet as they bat at me while she wanders toward a chair.

“Why do you want to go there?” I sense there’s something more to her plan. Going to some construction site isn’t exactly a Cassy thing.

“Just want to see if the town’s gossip is true, that’s all.” She picks up a brush and sits down.

Coming from behind her, I lead into the question I’m sure she is dying to ask.
